Karshi
Karshi (palace in Mongolian) gets its modern name from the twin palaces built here in the 1320s by the Chagatay khans Kabak and Kasanby on the site of Chingiskhan's old summer pastures. In 1364 another Mongol, Tamerlane, wintered in Karshi and ordered the construction of a citadel and moat in what is now in southern part of Karshi. It was into this citadel that most of the town later fled, under siege from the successive campaigns of Shayboniykhan and Abdullakhan. In XVIII century the importance of Karshi grow and it was the second biggest city in Bukhara emirate. At this time Karshi was surrounded by two walls, there were four medresses, ten caravanserais, public baths, gardens, a prison and even a secret tunnel which, in times of nomadic invasions, it would provide the place of the beg with an escape route to the outside world. Today Karshi is the center of Kashkadaryo region, which is considered to be the biggest region in Uzbekistan with the population of nearly 250 thousand.
